Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by differences in social communication, interaction, and behaviour patterns. The word “spectrum” reflects the wide range of experiences and abilities among individuals with autism.
Common features may include:
Differences in understanding social cues,
Intense focus on specific interests,
Preference for routines,
Sensory sensitivities (to sounds, lights, textures),
Unique ways of learning and problem-solving.
Importantly, ASD is not a disease to “cure” but a different way of experiencing the world. Many autistic people have strengths such as creativity, attention to detail, or innovative thinking.
Support may involve therapy, accommodations in school or work, and acceptance from society. The focus has shifted from “fixing” autistic individuals to building inclusive environments where neurodiversity is valued.
