Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a mental health condition where a person becomes preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance. These flaws may be minor or not visible to others, but to the individual, they feel very significant.
People with BDD may spend hours checking mirrors, grooming excessively, seeking reassurance, or even avoiding social situations out of fear of being judged. The condition is linked to high levels of distress, anxiety, and impaired daily functioning.
BDD is not simply “vanity.” It is related to how the brain processes self-image and is often connected to perfectionism, low self-esteem, or past experiences of criticism. Treatment usually involves cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and sometimes medication to reduce obsessive thoughts.
