The peripheral nervous system consists of all nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It connects the central nervous system to the rest of the body, carrying sensory information in and motor commands out. The PNS has two branches: the somatic system (voluntary movement and sensory signals) and the autonomic system (automatic functions like heart rate and digestion).
