Repression is a defence mechanism where painful thoughts, memories, or feelings are pushed out of conscious awareness. Unlike suppression (consciously avoiding thoughts), repression happens unconsciously. While it reduces anxiety in the short term, repressed material may influence behaviour and resurface under stress.
